Overview

This article explains how to update existing variants for a product. By updating variants, you can adjust SKUs, modify attribute values, change the default selection, or upload new images without recreating the variant.

Prerequisites

Before updating variants, ensure the following:

  • The product already has variants created.

  • The product already has variants added that you want to update.

  • Variant images are consistent in style and use the same dimensions.

Steps to Edit Variants

  1. Navigate to Merchandise  and click on the Product Setup menu.

  2. Search for the product by Product Name or Product Code, then click the product name.

  1. From the left navigation, select Define Variants. The list of existing variants will appear.

  2. Locate the variant you wish to edit and click the Edit (Pencil Icon) next to it.

  3. Update the variant details, such as:

  • Variant Code (SKU)

  • Attribute Values (dropdowns)

  • Default Variant

  • Replace Image

  1. Once the details are updated click on the Update icon.

  2. The variant details will be updated and a success message will appear.

  3. The variant details will be updated.

Description

Variant Code

Unique identifier (SKU) for the variant. Ensure it remains unique after updates.

Attribute Value

Update the Attribute value that will appear in the dropdown.

Default

Mark one variant as default for initial product loads.

Upload Image

Update per-variant image. Keep style and size uniform across variants.

Q1. Can I change the Attribute Set while updating a variant?

  • No, the Attribute Set cannot be changed once the variant is created. To use a different

  • Attribute Set, create a new product variant instead.

Q2. Can I change the Add Additional Attribute while updating a variant?

  • No. You cannot add an additional attribute while updating a variant. To add a new attribute, it must first be added to the product’s attribute set. After that, you will need to remove the existing variants tied to the old attribute set and then re-set up all the SKUs with the updated attribute set.

Q3. Do I need to re-upload images if only the Variant Code is updated?

  • No, re-uploading images is not required unless the images themselves need to be changed.

Q4. What if I receive an error about image dimensions when updating images?

  • Ensure that all variant images have the same dimensions and resolution across the product. 

  • Replace inconsistent files with uniform versions.

Q5. Can I update which variant is marked as Default?

  • Yes, you can change the default variant. 

Q6. Will updating a variant affect SKUs in the catalog?

  • Yes, if you change the Variant Code, the SKU in the catalog in Ecommerce will not change. Make sure to match the SKU in the Ecommerce and Artifi same and should match

  • Plan SKU updates carefully to avoid conflicts with existing custom products.
